What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a method of inducing an altered state of attention or heightened awareness in another person also known as a ‘trance’ state. This is a natural state of relaxation in which you can use imagination and respond to positive suggestions in a creative and productive way.

The trance state is actually a natural phenomenon, sometimes occurring spontaneously, when a person has become totally absorbed in what they are doing. An example of that is when you have the experience of finding yourself immersed in a daydream, or becoming absorbed in a pleasant task and losing track of time.

Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. It is not like an anaesthetic. You do not “pass out” and you are not unconscious when you are hypnotised. You do not lose control over your mind or your feelings. You will not be made to do things you would normally not do. In fact, your will-power may be strengthened with hypnosis. Hypnosis is not a miracle cure where you take no responsibility for positive change. It is a way of accessing your inner strength to achieve what is naturally good for you. Most people describe the experience of hypnosis as very pleasant.
